For Healthcare Providers
How can Partners for Tobacco Free Lake County assist healthcare
providers?
Our member organizations are dedicated to assisting all healthcare
providers by offering the following free services:
- Brochures, posters, and other materials about quitting tobacco
- Consultation with a Mayo Clinic Certified Tobacco Treatment
Specialist
- Surveys that assess current tobacco intervention
- Workshops on tobacco use identification and nicotine dependence
treatment
What kind of workshops does Partners offer healthcare providers?
Free educational instruction is available for physicians, nurses,
dentists, and other healthcare providers on the key recommendations
outlined in Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update by the US
Department of Health and Human Services. Topics include:
- The 5A’s (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) or “Ask, Advise,
Refer” as described below
- Implementing Tobacco Use Identification
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy and other Pharmocotherapy
As a healthcare provider, what more can I do to help my patients
quit?
Physicians, dentists, and nurses are trusted sources of medical
information and advice. You can make the difference by following these 3
steps:
1. Ask patients if they use tobacco at every visit
2. Advise tobacco users to quit at every visit
3. Refer them to proven resources that will help them quit (see
Quit Smoking Programs)
